The Marginalization of Homosexual Men within Contemporary Mainstream Cinema

In modern, wide-release cinema, gay men are portrayed in a marginalized manner. Homosexual male characters are often depicted as cliché, effeminate, comedic reliefs, serving as secondary, supporting roles instead of leading ones. Subsequently, queer characters are provided less screen time and lack solid character development within their roles. A stigma seems to exist in Hollywood, categorizing these queer roles as artistic in merit by gifting heterosexual men with awards for portraying homosexual characters, hindering the presentation of queer roles as normal within society. This presentation analyzes sixteen major motion pictures released from 1990 to 2017, categorizing each film based on its number of theater releases, awards received, major actors, and characterization of gay men.
